5 Documentaries to Watch in August

5 Documentaries to Watch in August

The streaming platforms you know and love - and probably some you don’t - are deepening their documentary catalogs with new true stories on titillating topics.

THE PRINCESS | HBO

On August 13th, the 25th anniversary of her death, HBO will release “The Princess,” a poignant look into the late Princess Diana’s life, lived in the unrelenting and invasive glare of a TMZ fever dream. Deftly weaving together archival audio and video footage, her story is told as if the events are all occurring in the present, giving you a first-person view into how emotionally crushing it was to have her every move scrutinized.

POST MALONE: RUNAWAY | FREEVEE

Okay listen, we may be biased about this one because we’re inexplicably obsessed with Posty who, like the funniest dude in the crew whose ideas might get everyone arrested, is someone we’re both drawn to and unnerved by. That said, we’re def here for Post Malone: Runaway, which is Amazon Freevee’s second original movie. Through a combination of footage of exclusive backstage access, live performances, and one on one interviews the story is told about an artist that defies definition.

Not feeling Posty’s vibe like we do? Find an alternative in Amazon’s documentary catalog.

TRAINWRECK: WOODSTOCK | NETFLIX

Go for the riots, stay for the sexual assaults and arson! In this dark documentary series each episode unfolds a day of the festival, kicking off with ebullient beginnings on Friday and then spiraling down into the catastrophic early hours of Monday morning. We know, we know, it seems like there are no heroes in this story but that’s because we haven’t told you that the producers of the show freely admit that for them this was just about a money grab!.

If treachery set to music isn’t your jam, try Netflix’s other documentaries!

THE KIDS IN THE HALL: COMEDY PUNKS | PRIME VIDEO

No heads were crushed in the making of director Reg Harkema’s close look at Canada’s favorite misfit sons. Interspersed among archival footage and clips are present day separate interviews with Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson, and as a group. And yes, that’s as entertaining as it sounds.

Funny Canadians not your bag? (sorry Ryan Reynolds) Then rummage through Prime’s documentary bin for something else!

FIRE OF LOVE | IN THEATERS

In 1991, fearless French volcanologists and lovers Katia and Maurice Krafft perished in a volcanic explosion while studying the mysteries of volcanoes together in Japan.

Rolling Stone called it, “The greatest lava-fueled love story ever told” and if that’s not enough to seize your interest, maybe the fact that they captured almost every bit of it on film, right up until their last fiery day, will.

See you next month!
