From Stephen King’s original story of a family trapped in an empty, yet somehow still very terrifyinglyl occupied hotel to Kubrick’s meticulous (and famously maddening) filming methods, The Shining has left audiences riveted—and double checking their bathtubs—for decades. In the list below, you’ll find documentaries that explore everything from Room 237’s conspiracy theories to King’s original nightmare fuel. So, grab a highball from Lloyd the bartender and prepare to lose your mind over these must-watch docs about King’s crowning achieve

Alright, I’ll admit it: Stephen King has been my favorite author since I was in the 6th grade, and The Shining? Hands down, the scariest of his books and my favorite of his books made into movies. Which pains me to say because it’s his LEAST favorite of his film adapted works!  So, yes, I’m biased. But with good reason! From dead twin girls beckoning Danny like blank faced cupie dolls, to naked ghosts that morph from gorgeous to hideous in just one damp hug and all of the bat swinging, axe wielding moments in between, this story hits all the right horror notes. These documentaries dive into everything that makes The Shining truly iconic, peeling back the layers of King’s genius, Kubrick’s cinematic vision, and the mysterious allure of horror that keeps so many of us coming back for me. So, take it from a lifelong fan—these docs are a must-watch!
